Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen is an ancient stone tomb dating between 2000 - 2500 B.C. It is one of the most famous and most photographed Irish dolmens. Poulnabrone translates into Irish as 'The hole of the sorrows'.

The dolmen was excavated in 1986, among the discoveries were the uncrematd remains of 16-22 adults and 6 children and one newborn baby.It appears the bodies had been burried elsewhere before bein g placed in the the Dolmon. The dolmon would then have been covered in stones.
To get to Poulnabrone from Ennis, take N 85 north to R 476. Travel through Corofin and turn right onto R 480 at Leamaneh Castle. Signposted, Poulnabrone is approximately 9 kilometers up this road on the right. A new parking area adjacent to the dolmen was opened a few years back. Story boards leading from the carpark to the dolmen explain the history of the area well.
